Years ago, I mean many years ago, when I led a mainstream jazz quintet called Full Count Jazz Band, I met pianist Doug White and asked him fill in with me on a precious few occasion. His lyrical, confident style is a memory that has stayed with me. Then life happened, and we went our separate ways. Decades later, a mutual friend got us together to just jam on a few lazy afternoons as the pandemic receded. Doug has been writing a lot of late, and has asked me to join him in a few concert performances of his original material. I was honored to accept.
This gig, loosely associated with the Madison Jazz Festival, is our debut performance. Vibraphonist Doug Normington is the third of the trio.
This is a show for fans of jazz. Mr. White’s compositions are challenging for a folk-y picker like myself, but they are also fun, beautiful pieces.
